We all know that lemon is good for you, but what about Lemongrass? Here are a some fun facts about lemongrass and it’s common uses.

Lemongrass’ Latin Name is  Cymbopogon citratus; it is native to India and parts of Asia, lemongrass is a common ingredient in Asian-inspired cuisine, enhancing soups and curries. This perennial grass adapts well to warm climates, offering an infusion of lemon flavor in both food and a cup of tea. When brewed as a tea, it is claimed to help with digestion, nervousness, and even high blood pressure. “[Lemongrass is] nicknamed mosquito grass, the pheromones that help produce the citronella aroma is a natural insect repellent, scaring away mosquitoes and even ants. For the largest impact, plant lemongrass along your walkway or add a few potted planters to your patio.” (http://www.thedailytea.com/taste/brew-lemongrass-tea/) If you are not able to grow lemongrass at home, buy it at the store to make a homemade insecticide. (Wash thoroughly, slice and crush the lemongrass into a pulp, then spread it onto your skin.) A cup of lemongrass herbal tea will help cure a croaky throat; uses for lemongrass medicinally dates back to the 18th century, where lemongrass was a go-to ingredient in  medicine cabinets of most Mexicans and Spanish immigrants for a variety of sicknesses, like an anti-fungal and respiratory ailments. And to top that off, Ayurvedic medicine uses this herb to alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort including indigestion, stomachaches, and at times parasites.

Here are a few lemongrass tricks that we have found!

  • The vitamin A in lemongrass can help clear reduce oiliness, and may help with acne, when the tea is used as a facial rinse.
  • A lemongrass herbal infusions can be made from either dry or fresh leaves t help not only with digestion, but boost the immune system. (When using the fresh leaves, cut them into small pieces t by slicing the stalk lengthwise, then cutting small half-rounds down the stock. Crush these half-rounds to release the oils, then steep in boiling hot water for 6-10 minutes.)
