What is Yerba Mate?

Information taken from www.yerbamate.com

Yerba maté (Ilex paraguariensis) is a South American, subtropical, evergreen species of the holly family, growing as a shrub or a small tree in Argentina, southern Chile, and eastern Paraguay, western Uruguay, and western Brazil.

The infusion called maté is prepared by steeping dry leaves in hot, not boiling, water in a hollow gourd called maté, guampa or cabaça. It is sipped through a Bombilla, a metal straw that is often shared among friends in those countries.

Yerba maté receives a lot of press as a diet and weight loss tea. While nothing can replace a healthy diet, and regular exercise, the tea can give you certainly a boost: it raises the metabolism, regulates the appetite, aids in digestion and provides many antioxidants, minerals, amino acids, and B vitamins to support a healthy life style.

Yerba maté contains all three known Xanthine Alkaloids: caffeine (contained in coffee), theophylline (contained in green tea) and theobromine (contained in chocolate), in much lowered doses that in the aforementioned products. It also supplies minerals and B-vitamins to relax muscles. For these reasons, the infusion produces balanced, long lasting physical and mental stimulation.

Sereni-tea carries the more common green maté as well as the roasted yerba maté.  We also carry bomillas and gourds, so you can enjoy the infusion in the traditional South American way.
